Sichuan earthquake 2008

May 12, 2008 at 14:28:01.42 on Beijing time in the Chinese province of Sichuan was a devastating earthquake. The magnitude of the earthquake of 8 Mw according to the China Seismological Bureau and the 7,9 Mw according to USGS. The epicenter is fixed at 75 km from the capital city of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, hypocenter - at a depth of 19 km. 

This earthquake is also known as Venchuanskoe as the epicenter of the earthquake falls on the county of Wenchuan. The earthquake was felt in Beijing (removal of 1,500 km) and Shanghai (1.700 km), which shook office buildings and the evacuation. He was felt in neighboring countries: India, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mongolia and Russia. 

Official sources say that on August 4, 2008 killed 69,197 people are missing about 18 thousand people, injured 288,431. The earthquake occurred in a seismically active fault Lunmenshan, which runs along the western edge of Sichuan Basin, separating it from the Sino-Tibetan mountains. 

Some scientists believe that this earthquake was prchinoy artificial reservoir on the river Tszypinpu Minzyang. To this conclusion independently arrived two groups of scientists led by Dr Christian Klose (Columbia University, USA) and the Chinese seismologist Dr. Leah Singlinya (Dr. Lei Xinglin .)

A common cause of the accident were considered as tectonic shifts within Beychuanskogo fault, which separates the Indian and Asian platform. But Dr Christian Klose drew attention to the fact that the area of Quaternary Cenozoic era (that is, over the past two million years old) does not shaking. Many seismologists are inclined to think that the earthquake was caused by local deformations on the surface of the earth's crust, not deep tectonics.

Dr Klose said that the water filling the reservoir Tszypinpu, located just 500 meters from the fault and 5.5 km from the epicenter, and was the cause of this earthquake. However, scientists for some time to make specific findings did not, because the Chinese government did not allow access to data on the technical characteristics of the dam.

More recently, thanks to information received from the chief engineer of the Sichuan Geology Department in Chengdu Xiao Fan, it was reported that the reservoir began to fill in December 2004. And for two years, the water level rose to 120 meters. It is very fast. Moreover, Fan Xiao said that a week before the earthquake the water level in the reservoir has fallen dramatically.

According to Dr. Klose, the water pressure has created a powerful additional strain on the fault itself. It is estimated Americans, the resulting impact on Beychuansky fracture is 25 times higher than the load created by the natural movement of tectonic plates. In addition, water from the reservoir penetrated deep into the crust. 

Dr. Leigh Sinlin (Dr. Lei Xinglin) adds that the tensile strength of rock fell from penetrating the water in them. He also confirmed that the water is too much pressure on the rocks.

Fan Xiao said that "we must treat with great attention to new projects and construction of any large-scale, given the possible risk in the occurrence of man-made disasters." In this pessimistic Fan says: "It is unlikely that large-scale projects will be closed, primarily because of the prevailing economic interests above all others."
