Top 10 most destructive earthquakes in the past 500 years 

 

A. January 23, 1556 - Great Chinese earthquake in Gansu and Shaanxi, China. Died about 830 thousand people. The greatest number of people killed in the earthquake in history. 

Two. 1737 - Earthquake in Calcutta , India. Died about 300 thousand people.  


Three. 1755 - Earthquake in Lisbon , the city was completely destroyed. The death toll 60 - 100 thousand people.

 

4. 1897 - Earthquake in Assam , India. In an area of 23,000 sq km terrain changed beyond recognition. This earthquake is likely to become the largest in the history of mankind.

Eight. December 26, 2004 - Tsunami caused by the most powerful earthquake in decades (9.0 on the Richter scale) struck the coast of India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Somalia and Kenya. The epicenter was located on a 30-kilometer depth near the Aceh province in northwest Sumatra. The total death toll from the tsunami was about 300 thousand people.

 

9. May 12, 2008 - Earthquake in Sichuan Province , China. 7.8 on the Richter scale.The epicenter was 92 kilometers north-west of the provincial capital, Chengdu. New strong earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred on May 13. The total death toll was more than 69 thousand people, injured more than 370 thousand more than 17 thousand people are missing.


10. January 12, 2010 - Haiti earthquake , 7.1 on the Richter scale killed at estimated 222-232 thousand people.

December 22 Damhan 856 near the town in northern Iran - about 200 thousand people were killed.

September 30, 1139 near the city of Ganja in the Seljuk Empire (now the territory of Azerbaijan) - 230 000 people died.

April 18, 1906 - San Francisco, USA (magnitude 7.8). 1.5 thousand people were killed, destroyed 10 km ² of the city. 

December 28, 1908 - Messina, Sicily, Italy (7.5 points). Killed 83 thousand people, Mr. Messina turned into ruins.
